The pathway to teaching artistry has always been a little elusive. Whether it’s generally knowing it even exists, or understanding what training or professional development might prepare you for a position – there’s no one way to teaching artistry or one way to be a teaching artist, a position that is fundamental in a healthy arts ecosystem.

At Steppenwolf, The Emerging Teaching Artist position is a year-long temporary part-time position for entry level teaching artists to develop their practice, receive training, gain mentorship, and learn more about the field of Teaching Artistry while gaining hands-on experience in the field. The Emerging Teaching Artist will:

  • Assist in the facilitation of Steppenwolf residency workshops in Chicago Public School classrooms and Young Adult Council after school meetings onsite at Steppenwolf.
  • Receive one on one mentorship with an experienced Steppenwolf Lead Teaching Artist.
  • Attend several professional development sessions over the course of the year to gain foundational Teaching Artistry skills.
  • Observe and participate in Steppenwolf curriculum development, training, and implementation process alongside the Steppenwolf Teaching Artist Cohort.
