Nonggi Art Installation

"This project gives us a vehicle to bring our communities together, talk about immigration and citizenship, tell our stories on these NongGis and display them throughout Chicago as a statement of shared purpose and identity." - Aram Han Sifuentes
Nonggi (Korean Banners)
These banners were created at the HANA Center in Albany Park in workshops facilitated by Artist Aram Han Sifuentes, as part of the project Citizenship For All: Storytelling Through Nonggi Making. The ongoing Nonggi banner making workshops are held for multi-generational, multi-ethnic immigrant communities in Chicago through storytelling and hands-on creation to achieve immigrant and racial justice. This workshop series will culminate with the banners being displayed on the facade of the HANA Center and are currently featured here at Steppenwolf, where Martyna Majok's Sanctuary City is in production.

The creation of these powerful nonggis and the radical change this project inspires will provide relevant context regarding themes explored in our production of Sanctuary City (on stage now through November 18th).
